If you are a contractor or sub-contractor to governmental agencies and organizations, the government’s new mandate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology — NIST Special Publication 800-171 — impacts you. You must implement security measures beyond passwords to support these entities.
The SP800-0171 mandate requires: "Must bring a more secure MFA (multi-factor authentication) into their organization" (i.e., organizations supplying to the DoD can no longer rely on passwords alone). Failure to comply may affect new and current federal contracts.
Implementing logical access and multi-factor authentication — soft token, hardware token and smart cards — solves this mandate problem.
Compliance is required by December 2017. For some, SP 800-0171 compliance requirements may come sooner as contracts are renewed or novated.
